The school is located in Yangling, Shaanxi Province, and is one of the 32 deputy ministerial-level institutions directly managed by the central government. "985 Project" and "World-class University Construction Universities", the school is jointly established by 16 ministries and commissions including the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Water Resources, and the State Forestry Administration and Shaanxi Province. It is also the most complete agricultural and forestry institution of higher learning in China.

The school was founded in 1934 as the National Northwest Agriculture and Forestry College. Until 1999, the school merged with 7 science and education units including Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University and Northwest Forestry College to form Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University.

The school is very advantageous in agriculture and forestry disciplines.
