How much is the ability worth? 6 factors that determine workplace 'worth'

thumbnail

In the workplace, more than 90% of people think that their income does not match their abilities;

In the talent market, people who think they should get a higher salary probably also account for the majority;

There are also many people who think that they are underappreciated and undervalued.

However, are business owners, company leaders, and HR of employers blinded, or are we overestimating our "worth"?

What are the factors that determine a person's workplace "worth"?

Based on my 16 years of experience in the industry, I have summarized the following points for your reference:

[1] Personal core competence & market scarcity:

In the workplace, what core competencies do you have, and how scarce is your core competencies in the talent market?

Everyone has different areas of focus, different positions, and different core competencies.

like:

The core competence of sales staff should be in business development, business negotiation, etc.;

The core competence of R&D personnel should be technology and innovation in the professional field.

Then, what percentage of the core competencies you rely on for survival rank in the top percent among similar talents in a specific region?

For example, a product R&D person whose technological innovation ability ranks in the top 10% of the industry nationwide can be said to be a scarce talent in the industry and has real core competitiveness.

In other words, the more distinctive your expertise, the higher your ranking in the industry, and the higher your career value.

So, no matter what career you are in, you should first try to find your area of expertise, and strive to be in the top 10% in the same field.

[2] Seniority of personal work:

Although the situation of seniority ranking in modern enterprises is decreasing, the longer the working years and the deeper the experience, it shows that the more experience a person has, the stronger the ability to solve problems.

At the same time, the longer the tenure in the same company, the higher the loyalty to some extent.

Experience and loyalty are still important reference standards for judging the "worth" of people in the workplace.

Therefore, in our work, we need to be more involved, whether it is more extensive participation in different types of projects, or more focused participation in the same field of work, both are important ways to accumulate experience and improve the "golden content" of seniority. The former Determines the "breadth", the latter determines the "depth", and the combination of the two can more affect a person's "height".

In addition, try to avoid frequent job-hopping. Working in a company for more than 3 years can make a person's loyalty get a certain bonus.

【3】Cities where you once worked:

The same industry, the same job position, the same qualifications, and the same ability level have different "worth" in different cities.

like:

With the same ability, talents in the advertising industry who have worked in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen are more "worth" than those in other provincial capital cities or special zones.

Talents who have been engaged in the e-commerce industry in the Yangtze River Delta region must also be "worth more" than other provinces.

This is determined by the degree and speed of industry development in the city (or region) where it is located.

Therefore, if you want to improve your workplace "worth", you should focus on choosing a city with a relatively high overall level of the industry, or an industry with a relatively fast development in the city.

The advertising people who went to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen to gild back then became "sweet pastry" when they returned to their hometown;

At present, even if the e-commerce talents in Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions meet with blood and blood, when they go to other regions, they can obviously form a "dimension reduction attack".

【IV】Personal interpersonal network:

The interpersonal network of people in the workplace is one of the decisive factors for their workplace "worth".

Because a person's career success is largely determined by his network of contacts.

High-quality interpersonal network can help individuals and their teams to solve difficulties and problems of different degrees in all aspects, one of them;

Rich human resources can help individuals and their enterprises to enter the fast lane in business development, business expansion, product research and development, etc., and secondly;

Excellent friends in the circle can make originally mediocre people excellent; they can also make excellent people better, and the third.

Therefore, no matter from the perspective of individuals, teams, careers, etc., professionals in the workplace should pay attention to establishing high-quality, high-grade, and high-standard interpersonal networks.

The wider the distribution of your interpersonal network and the higher the level, then the "worth" of your workplace can also go up.

【V】Nature of the company you have worked for:

Many people think that "it's better to be a chicken head than a phoenix tail".

However, people who have done "phoenix tail" are more likely to become "chicken head" or even "crown head", which is determined by the nature of the enterprise they once worked for.

A person in the workplace, the nature of the company he once worked for, can bring a brand endorsement effect to TA.

I have worked for the region's premier advertising agency and have seen too many examples of this.

The same are several students who graduated from a university majoring in advertising. After working in our company for three years, one jumped to the marketing department of a Fortune 500 company, and the other students did internships for higher positions and better treatment. After the end, I chose to leave and went to other little-known advertising companies. After a few years, I returned to our company to apply for a job, but I was eliminated because the past cases were not convincing.

When working in enterprises of different nature, in addition to the persuasiveness of the projects involved, the precipitation of human resources, the accumulation of experience and ability, and the degree of professionalization are vastly different.

for example:

Foreign-funded enterprises determine the foreign-related ability, foreign language proficiency and international professional quality of employees;

Listed companies determine the professionalization level of employees, the standardization of processes, and professional skills;

Large state-owned enterprises determine the accumulation and precipitation of resources in various aspects, the familiarity and understanding of policies and regulations, etc.;

……

Therefore, in which areas you want to improve your personal "worth" in the workplace, you should try to choose a matching company to work for.

[6] Leaders and teams that have followed:

The workplace "worth" of the leaders you once followed also determines your "worth" to a large extent.

As the saying goes, "Famous teachers produce great apprentices" and "strong generals have no weak soldiers".

At the same time, the "worth" of your team also determines your "worth".

At the beginning of one's career, it is very fortunate for a professional to meet a leader with excellent ability, reputation and performance, and to join a team with good combat effectiveness and record.

You may not be able to choose, but you can choose to establish a good partnership with leaders and colleagues, and work hard to help your leaders and teams to achieve industry reputation and performance.

After all, as a rookie in the workplace, it is much easier to help leaders and teams build their brands than to build their own brands.

Of course, the premise is that the leader is worth doing, and the teammates have a common goal and are willing to do it.

It is human nature for a person in the workplace to hope for higher value recognition and higher remuneration.

And a person's "worth" in the workplace is not only about your education, ability, qualifications and past performance, nor just how hard you worked in the past.

Workplace "worth" is determined by various factors such as personal core competitiveness, experience, industry and region, social network owned, company you work for, leadership and team you follow.

Among them, there are personal efforts and more personal choices.

It is said that "choice is more important than effort", we need to analyze objectively, judge rationally, choose courageously, and make efforts in the right direction and in many aspects.

Only in this way can you make yourself "invaluable" in the workplace!

What is your workplace "worth"?

What factors determine this?
