The summer vacation is here, and many students have returned to their hometowns one after another. While caring about each other, they have to talk about their future career ideas. For example, my cousin, the parent of a student majoring in animal medicine, is very worried that her girl will not find a good job in the future; but her cousin's daughter is full of confidence, feeling that the pet market is getting bigger and bigger, and her professional Very tasty.

It is said that the pet market is getting bigger and bigger, and the employment direction of animal medicine will get better and better?

The "lawsuit" hit me, and someone asked this question on the Internet just two days ago, so let me systematically talk about the profession of veterinary medicine (referred to as veterinary medicine). The following content comes from my interviews with 6 students majoring in veterinary medicine.

First, at present, this is still a niche profession.

Mobile medicine itself is not a brand-new profession, and even this profession has existed since ancient times. However, it can only be regarded as a niche profession. Through Baidu Encyclopedia search, there are 61 universities in the country that offer this major, and if you search for software engineering, there are about 200 colleges that offer related majors (PS: The opening of majors does reflect the market demand to a certain extent).

Although the pet industry has indeed developed rapidly in recent years, mobile medicine is not equal to pet doctors. This profession is mainly aimed at animal husbandry in agriculture - cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, fish, etc. Although most of us eat meat and eggs every day (the source is animal husbandry, the food industry in the middle, and the circulation industry at the end), in fact, the overall profit margin of the animal husbandry industry as the source is relatively low, and the industry risks are relatively high (such as large epidemics and market fluctuations), and are mainly distributed in rural areas. Therefore, the salary is not very ideal, and many people do not like the working environment.

For example, a boy I tutored, grew up in the city, majored in veterinary medicine, and achieved good academic performance. Later, after accepting the school's arrangement to go to the farm for an internship for half a month, I fell into pain, "I absolutely don't want to work in the environment of the farm!"

Although I graduated from Agricultural University, I have to say that the above is the basic background of animal medicine for a long time.

Second, the profession is very characteristic, it may be joy or pain.

There are many people who like small animals, so I have been asked by relatives and friends more than once, "My child likes small animals, how to learn to practice medicine". But learning animal medicine and engaging in animal medicine is not the same thing as licking cats and dogs! Artificial insemination of large livestock, cleaning of cow dung and pig dung when going to school, bone setting, dissection and research of dung, etc., are the daily routine of this profession.

Once a cattle farm in Anhui came to our school to recruit technical veterinarians. The requirements were to graduate with a master's degree or to be a very good undergraduate. The salary was the standard of ordinary private enterprises (annual salary of 70,000 to 80,000 yuan), and they provided accommodation and then also provided A motorbike - because you have to go from the dormitory to and from the vast farm, to patrol the cattle, take care of the old and sick, and give injections. To be honest, there were not many students who wanted to go there at that time, and the tour of "the vast sky and the wild" was very good, and it was another matter for work.

Another time, my classmates shared pictures in the circle of friends and said, "It's late at night, let's have something exciting", I clicked on it, and it was all kinds of internal organs that were dissected on the workbench...

(To avoid discomfort, I'd better put a cute cat)

Third, focus on the employment situation.

The good news is that it is getting better and better, especially with the development of the pet industry in recent years, the treatment of pet doctors has also improved! However, veterinarians do not represent the entire field of veterinary medicine.

  1. Introduce according to the subdivision of animal medicine (this classification is more obvious in the postgraduate stage).

  2. Preventive veterinarians: The main counterparts in the aquaculture industry are veterinary technicians in farms, who are responsible for epidemic prevention and quarantine of animals in the factory; Therefore, its counterparts are farms, animal epidemic prevention, customs quarantine, and animal breeding.

  3. Clinical veterinarians: mainly provide disease treatment for animals of various sizes, that is, animal doctors. Recently, it has become more and more hot, and the market gap is more obvious, but the industry is still immature. Specifically, there are currently more private small animal hospitals and fewer large animal hospitals. There is a huge gap between private hospitals and large hospitals in terms of surgical procedures, medical standards, and employee wages and benefits. Therefore, in addition to pet doctors in the commercial field, the agricultural and animal husbandry departments will also have relevant technical personnel, and zoos will also have relevant positions.

  4. Basic veterinary medicine: mainly in the direction of medicine and pathology. The classmates I interviewed told me that the veterinary medicine industry is also more niche than the veterinary medicine association, but it has been improving recently. Therefore, the corresponding employment directions are pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer, Merck, and Royal, such as R&D, reagent testing, etc.

Second, from the perspective of the depth of study: undergraduates, graduate students and doctoral students have different employment directions. usually:

  1. The main direction of the undergraduates in the field of medicine is to test the epidemic prevention and agricultural and animal husbandry departments of civil servants, or enter Pfizer and other large pharmaceutical companies as management trainees, and enter pet hospitals as intern doctors. There are also quite a few transfers.

For example, Xiao Wang, the student I interviewed, worked in a pet hospital for several months after graduating from an undergraduate degree in animal medicine, working almost 12 hours a day, with a salary of 5,000 (in Beijing) and social security is not formal. And she felt that the work was dirty and hard, so she switched to the English education industry. Xiao Zhou told me: From my own investigation, in the first-class colleges and universities, there are many undergraduates majoring in medical science who are admitted to postgraduate entrance examinations, and those who do not pass postgraduate entrance examinations are more likely to change careers.

And this statement is consistent with the information provided in the interaction between netizens and me (as shown in the figure below).

  1. The main directions for postgraduate graduation are as follows: there are many civil servants in epidemic prevention and animal husbandry departments, entering pharmaceutical companies to do drug testing, R&D or sales, entering pet hospitals as doctors, or taking exams, and overall fewer career changes.

For example, Xiaohui, a student I interviewed, after graduating from the study of veterinary medicine, although she did not become a veterinarian, she became an editor in a veterinary journal. After all, the veterinary profession has a long educational system. In fact, after studying for so long, I am reluctant to give it up completely.

  1. Doctoral degree: Mainly to enter the field of research and development, including research and development of universities, research and development of companies, and teaching in universities. For example, I know a doctor of mobile medicine who entered a college to teach.

So, what is the salary that everyone cares about most?

Of course, the salary depends on the comprehensive ability of the individual, including the school you graduated from, education, knowledge and skills you have mastered. However, it is not without a trace: for students entering the system, the salary is relatively fixed, and it is enough to directly refer to the standard of civil servants; for students entering the business field, I interviewed several actual cases, Might give you some inspiration.

  1. In Beijing, a doctor in a pet hospital with a two-year postgraduate degree earns a monthly salary of more than 10,000 yuan; a technical veterinarian in a large farm in the suburbs of Beijing has an annual salary of about 80,000 yuan + room and board; the research and development of foreign pharmaceutical companies is better than this.

  2. If you enter a club or a horse farm and do purebred horse breeding work, the treatment will be better; moreover, it is said that the treatment in Hong Kong will be better, which is probably the reason why Hong Kong's gaming industry is very prosperous.

At the same time, several classmates I interviewed said to me bitterly: In foreign countries, veterinarians have much better social status and treatment than domestic veterinarians.

This is indeed a bit wronged, but from another perspective, there is room for improvement, right? I believe that the employment prospects and treatment of the medical profession will also get better and better.

Finally, what is it like to be a veterinarian?

Xiao Zhou is currently working as a pet doctor in a pet hospital in Beijing. She likes small animals very much. In addition to outpatient visits and operations, she will take the initiative to take care of stray cats and dogs, and volunteer to treat or perform operations for them (the hospital has related public welfare programs.) Items, medicine is provided by the hospital, and the doctor is obliged to do it). When talking about what it feels like to be a veterinarian, she said: Although there are animals that cannot be saved with all their strength, and there are medical disputes, she still likes this profession very much. After all, many small animals have recovered with my help. Looking at their pure and lovely eyes, I think it's worth it.
